Great uses of Twitter at conferences

I had the pleasure of attending the Monitoring Social Media conference in Boston yesterday.  While I was there to discuss Social CRM, I took the opportunity to listen to a number of other speakers.

All of the speakers were great.  However, Aafia Chaudhry, CEO, JuvoLab & Founding Partner, Noesis, did a really nice job presenting the findings of research she performed at a recent conference.   She analyzed how companies at a recent medical conference were utilizing Twitter as part of their conference communication efforts.  Her findings, summarized on this slide, fall into two main categories:

Driving traffic to your booth and your website.

Aafia noted that one company had a large display setup at their booth where a twitter stream of conference-related tweets displayed.  People gathered at the booth to catch up on key highlights and to see their names scrolling by, it was a success.  One company, however, became so self-promotional in their attempts to drive traffic that the twitter audience became frustrated and negative towards their tweets, having the opposite effect.  Add value and respect your audience, good things will follow.

Educating the community

Adding value, providing education…. These are the  keys to success on twitter and beyond.  Many companies provided updates on treatments, disease-specific facts, and medical trials.  These updates, this information, was not about the company but was valuable information that others at the conference, and those not at the conference, could benefit from.  Become a trusted source of information and people will come to you.

Twitter, Facebook, Email, and other communication methods can supplement your in-person efforts at a conference.  Don’t miss out.

I have been sharing some insights with you on various channels and do not want to miss updating those of you who join me on my blog.

What is CityCamp?
CityCamp is a FREE unconference focused on innovation for municipal governments and community organizations. As an unconference, content for CityCamp is not planned for a passive audience. Instead, content is created and organized by participants and coordinated by facilitators. Participants are expected to play active roles in sessions. This provides an excellent format for creative, open exchange geared toward action.  

CityCamp’s are meant to bring together citizens, local government officials, municipal employees, experts, programmers, designers and journalists to share perspectives and insights about the cities in which they live.  

When is CityCamp Boston?
The target for CityCamp Boston is March 5th, 2011. We have a couple of potential venue locations and will share with you all the information as it becomes available.  

How can I help?
Have ideas for topics? Whether it’s something you want to present on yourself or something you’d love to hear others talk about, submit your idea.  Have ideas for venue? For caterers? For Sponsors?

Linda Doliner is in The Lab’s Spotlight

In this week’s Spotlight Poll Linda Doliner is our winner.  I have known Linda for a while as she was one of the earliest work wednesday supporters (along with Eric Andersen at IBM).  Here is Linda, in her own words, talking about what makes her tick, and why you should consider her for one of your job openings.

It has been said that analytical people are good to have but not necessities. I would argue that, especially in this economy, analytical staff members are luxuries you cannot afford not to have. We will help you with the needs analysis that will allow your company to staff smartly, monitor your costs so that all relevant inputs are captured and price your products so that your salespeople can sell on value not on price. Management reporting will have all of the variables requested with readable charts and understandable graphs that convey information to those who are not inclined to like working with numbers.

My value proposition includes a strong commitment to internal customer service and process improvement experience so that good information gets into decision makers’ hands in a short turnaround time. My database experience is with custom written applications as well as using Access to tap into data warehouses. One of the nicest things ever said about me was that I eat Pivot Tables [with formulas] for breakfast. Another label for me is Excel Mercenary because my experience has been to be assigned a project, getting the information and people organized then being called off the project to work on yet another corporate initiative.

I am looking for a position with a company in the Boston area (Burlington <> Framingham <> Boston <> Quincy). I am not targeting any job title but rather am looking for an organization that will utilize my database, Excel and people skills to help grow the company.
